Ada Sunrise Rotary celebrated Black History Month with a special presentation by Ada historians Walter Whitney and Dr. Vivian Williamson Whitney, held at the Ada Public Library.

On February 27, 2026, Ada Sunrise Rotary Club stepped outside its usual Friday morning routine to host a special Black History Month meeting at the Ada Public Library, welcoming members and community guests to an evening of history, reflection, and conversation.

The featured speakers were the Rev. Walter Whitney, a minister and longtime Ada community figure, and Dr. Vivian Ann Williamson Whitney, a researcher and professional development specialist whose work focuses on broadening opportunities for minorities in science and education. Together, they offered an engaging and personal look at the history of Black life and community in Ada, stories that are part of Ada's story, and deserve to be told and remembered.

Their presentation gave Rotarians and guests a richer understanding of the contributions Black residents have made throughout Ada's history, set against the broader backdrop of Oklahoma's complex and African American heritage.

Black History Month, observed each February, is an annual recognition of the achievements and history of African Americans. Ada Sunrise Rotary's commitment to learning, honest engagement, and community awareness reflects Rotary's core values of peace, fellowship, and service above self.
