Rotarians Adrian Odhiambo and Dwight Odell spent a hot, hard day hauling almost 7,000 pounds of glass to the recycler in Okmulgee, making sure Ada's accumulated glass didn't end up in the landfill as the ECU program pauses.
Rotarians Adrian Odhiambo and Dwight Odell delivered nearly 7,000 pounds of glass to the recycling facility in Okmulgee, a hot, physically demanding haul that kept a mountain of accumulated glass out of the landfill.
The glass had been piling up through Glass Recycling at ECU, a community program Ada Sunrise Rotary has supported since the beginning. Our club purchased the glass grinder that makes the program possible, crushing collected glass into sand that's mixed with concrete to produce pavers, which are often sold at the local farmers market. With that program now closing, hopefully only temporarily, and possibly returning down the road under a new name and no longer affiliated with ECU, the backlog of glass needed somewhere to go, and fast, before it ended up in the trash instead of getting recycled.
Adrian and Dwight stepped up to make the run themselves, loading, hauling, and unloading load after load in the summer heat. It wasn't glamorous work, but it's exactly the kind of hands-on effort that keeps a community commitment like this one alive.
